Acreage Reporting Deadline is July 15 at FSA Farmers and ranchers are reminded that the deadline will soon be here to get their 2014 crops and acreages recorded at their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office. Most FSA program participation depends on accurate acreage reports that list the current crops in their respective fields. Small grains like wheat and oats and spring vegetables had to be reported by December 15, while spring seeded crops and summer perennial grasses and CRP need to be reported by July 15 each year. Producer assistance offered by USDA, often requires current and historical farm data, to determine current and future program eligibility. This is very important this year especially because of the severe dry weather we continue to have. Mapped and recorded crop acreages are also used to calculate the amount of financial assistance producers can receive through various programs. USDA is continuing to modernize its data recording methods by transitioning to electronic farm information on computerized maps. Crop acreages reported by producers, historically were plotted and labeled on large aerial photographs maintained in each county FSA office. Full fields, partial fields, and the corresponding crops were manually drawn to scale on photographic maps, and updated annually. Lines and labels would often get more difficult to read as more information was written on limited map space. Today, by digitizing maps and recording producer data electronically, farm information can be displayed in multiple layers and integrated as desired. FSA's Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) are also compatible with mapped data from other agencies, and offer more analytical information which can improve agricultural efficiencies. Computing innovations at FSA are being coordinated with all subsequent agencies to develop a Common Computing Environment (CCE). The department is intent on expanding information sharing which will lead to a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of farm conditions and the multiplicity of variables that exist. With the aid of this new statistical information producers and agribusiness firms are better able to boost farm production and agricultural effectiveness. The Farm Service Agency uses producer certification information to populate GIS data bases that will provide farmers more analytic tools to help them compete in the ever challenging global marketplace. Don't forget! July 15 is the final date this year to timely report acres of all spring crops such as CRP acreage, corn, soybeans, peanuts, millet, sorghum sudan, summer perennial grasses such as bahia, bermuda, native, and crabgrass and all spring planted fruit and vegetables. Most FSA programs require acreage reporting to be eligible for program benefits so contact your Walthall County FSA Office before the filing deadline. Don't miss out.
