Businesses can do much to prepare for the impact of the many hazards they face in today's world including natural hazards like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and widespread serious illness such as the H1N1 flu virus pandemic. Human-caused hazards include accidents, acts of violence by people and acts of terrorism.

"Ready Business" has developed a website that assists businesses in developing a preparedness program. This presentation will review the tools they provide so that participants can create an effective "All-Hazards" Preparedness Plan for their business. The program's elements follow recommendations identified in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1600, Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity. NFPA 1600 is an American Standard adopted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The five steps in developing a preparedness program to be presented will be:
•        Program Management
•        Planning
•        Implementation
•        Testing and Exercises
•        Program Improvement

Workshop Presenter Mr. John B. Field Jr. has been with the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (CTDESPP-DEMHS) since June of 2012. Prior to joining CT DESPP-DEMHS he worked for the City of Torrington as the Emergency Management Director and Chief of the Fire Department. As such Chief Field was responsible for the protection of approximately 40,000 citizens from the effects of disasters and emergencies. Developing plans for preparing, responding to and recovering from these disasters/emergencies was the daily occurrence.
