Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine have discovered a previously unknown cardiac molecule that could provide a key to treating, and preventing, heart failure. The work was partially funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

High blood pressure in midlife may spur cognitive decline late

A review of data from thousands of Americans in the long-term NHLBI-supported Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC) suggests that a history of high blood pressure in midlife increases the risk of cognitive decline in old age, according to a report on the study led by Johns Hopkins researchers. The findings, the scientists say, indicate a treatable cause — hypertension — for at least some pervasive forms of cognitive deficit.
